I understand that bluetooth PDAs can be made to dial a contact's
number through a bluetooth Phone. However, that requires a 2 step
process and handling 2 devices to dial a number -

1. Pick up PDA and dial number
2. Switch to phone and talk

I don't mind carrying two devices, I just don't want to juggle 2 of
them to make a phone call. Is there a bluetooth phone that can be
programmed to simply read contacts from a PDA and then allow me to
dial a contact? The idea is:

* I will carry both bluetooth Phone and PDA in my pockets
* When I need to call a contact, I will bringout the phone
* The phone will read contacts from my PDA realtime and display them
* I will select a contact and hit dial

I think this is a more natural way to use a PDA and Phone together. Is
this possible with current devices and software?

Thanks.

With a standard phone like a T68 it is not really possible. You could
get your phone to synchronise with the PDA and use the numbers from
that, but then you might as well have put the numbers on the phone to
begin with. I assume from your description that you have far more
numbers on your PDA than would fit onto the phones memory.

A Smart phone like a Nokia 7650 or 6600 could probably do it. If you had
some software to open up a bluetooth serial port connection to your PDA
and then had some server on the PDA to respond to requests for phone
numbers. I don't know if anyone has written such a thing, I think the
market for it would be limited. You could probably fit enough contacts
onto the smartphone actuallu.

How about you use somehting like a Treo or XDA that are both a PDA and
Phone in one?

Yes, I have over 500 contacts. A PDA-Phone combo would be ideal for
me, but I am having trouble finding the right device that is a good
PDA AND a good phone. Since I live in the US, phones don't operate
across carriers. So, being stuck with phone carriers adds an
additional layer of complication in choosing a device. I figured if I
can live with 2 interoperable devices, I will have the freedom to find
the right PDA and the right phone. Additionally, I will have the
freedom to upgrade either device independantly of each other. Example
- I could switch just the phone if I change carriers and preserve my
investment in the PDA.

In any case, I am hopeful about the Treo 600. I prefer Pocket PC over
Palm, but the Treo 600 looks like the best PDA-Phone I have seen so
far.

I haven't seen anything like this and I'm not sure that the BT spec is
really set up for something like this either. I suppose you could do it if
you could establish a network connection between the phone and the PDA but I
don't know if there are any phones that support a generic networking profile
with BT.

Why not just use a BT headset and then you don't have to touch anything but
the PDA to select the number to be dialed. I think even a wired handsfree
headset would work as well.

Hi,

I am currently using a t68 cell and an ipaq 2215. I beam my contacts
from my ipaq to my cell via bluetooth and then dial the number in my
cell. I usually just carry my cell since I beam all my tasks and
appointments to my cell as well. So it is indeed possible.

That is not "real time".
