I have been wondering if it is possible to easily convert a dual band
GSM phone to a quad band?

Are all cellphones manufactured as quad band, but set up for dual band
because they are intended for sale in the USA?

Like the Nokia 1100, if sold in the USA it is labeled dual band.
If sold Internationally it is labeled quad band.
Is it the same phone with a jumper or solder joint placed differently?

One guy claims that all dual bands can be changed to quad band
by switching the lead coming from the antenna.

Can any one direct me to a website that explains all this?

Thanks

Only if the phone hardware is designed for quad band but performance is
limited to dual band in accordance with cellular carrier-specified
requests, or marketing concerns for certain geographic areas.

This used to be the case with some Motorola phones of 3-4 years ago, but
now recently.

There are different hardware variants of these low end phones. The US
version (1100b) was 1900 or 850/1900, and the other (1100a) was
900/1800. The hardware did not support quad band operation.

No, the entire RF circuitry is different.

Ask him to give you a puff of what he's smoking, it must be good stuff.
