I read in another post that Verizon is moving away from CDMA. What are they
going to use? GSM? What about their existing customer base? What will it
cost to convert their towers? How much will that disrupt the reliability of
their network?

Is this all just a rumor, or will Sprint customers be the only ones left on
CDMA? That would eliminate the ability to roam, wouldn't it?

It's going to take years.

"GSM" consists of the current 2G (TDMA) and 3G (W-CDMA), and upcoming
LTE (OFDM).
Verizon's said they'll use LTE in the future.

There are multiple CDMA operators that Sprint customers can roam on
(Alltel's a major one in my area),
so roaming will be affected much less than you'd guess.

This is not true. In many parts of the USA, Verizon is the only roaming
partner especially in the Western USA.

What's the population density of the majority of those areas
in which Verizon is the only other CDMA carrier?

Question on CDMA and data I've been away from CDMA-based providers for awhile. I was wondering if some of you knew the answer to a curiousity of mine. I've heard that the more users on a CDMA system, the higher the noise floor becomes, effectively shrinking the usable area of the
