Probably simple question - anonymous communications via blue

I'm not that well informed about bluetooth. I know that if I keep my
visiblity on people can see my phonename - for example if I am on a
bus or in a bar. I can also find out other people's phone names around
me (some very funny!). But I can never communicate with these people
as my connection always fails because of putting in the wrong code.
However, I get anonymous communications all the time 'hi luv', 'nice
legs luv' - that sort of thing. What are these people doing to connect
with me that I can't seem to do to connect with them?

They have security turned on; you don't.

They will be using third party software to send these messages. This
is a hobby in it's self and is called Bluejacking and if you Google
for it you will find plenty of information.

Depending on what type of phone you have you should be able to find
software to allow you to do this, although it is not 100% effective
and depends on the configuration of the target's phone or Bluetooth
device.
